Individual sports seemed most accepting of gay men. Tennis players, swimmers, divers and ice skaters all began to come out of the closet. But the most important story, I think, was one that was unfolding at gyms around the country. Lesbian personals were becoming gym rats, lifting weights and sculpting their bodies. Gay teams starting springing up, first in big cities, in everything from swimming to bowling to rugby. Openly interracial lesbian groups banded together to compete in the Gay Games, building upon league play across the country. Lesbian dating you name it, there’s a team for you somewhere. There’s a gay rodeo circuit, subject of a recent documentary on the gay dating services site. Today, there are not only gay teams, but gay leagues, with national organizations and championships. And gay men are coming out of the closet as sports fans, too. The Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics have sponsored Gay Days, courting fans who may have as much appreciation for the players’ physiques as for the nuances of the game. Some people are cynical of attempts to court gay fans, suggesting that it is all about the money. To me, though, it is a larger issue. But it is a brave new world out there now. It’s not perfect there are still pockets of homophobia all around the country, and it’s ingrained in many team sports. But the more examples we see gay chat and other lesbian chat more open and accepting out society will become.
